Aiming high

One of Asia’s fastest-growing carrier-neutral data centres has become the first in Malaysia to adopt  Times Top’s much-lauded ‘green’ power protection system.

The AIMS Group, which also operates in Hong Kong and Thailand, has invested in the Diesel Rotary Uninterruptable Power Supply (DRUPS) technology for its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

AIMS Chief Executive Chiew Kok Hin said it was obviously paramount to have uninterruptable power supply and DRUPS saved them space, used less energy and was more efficient.

DRUPS is an environmentally friendly system that leverages on the stored kinetic energy of a spinning flywheel instead of a battery pack.

“It is a green technology that operates in a mechanically ventilated room without the need for air-conditioning. It’s being used worldwide but we are the first in our industry to install it here,” he said.

“Our key focus has always been on providing top-quality data-centre hosting services and we always look to exceed our customers’ satisfaction and expectations. We are confident that DRUPS will give our customers better uptime, reliability and availability,” he said.

With that sort of smart thinking you wouldn’t bet against them succeeding in their mission to become one of Asia Pacific’s elite carrier-neutral data groups by 2015.

About DRUPS technology
DRUPS is a green technology that enables large data centres – which require great amounts of mega watt UPS power – to support UPS and mechanical loads such as Chillers and CRAH. Powered by batteries, traditional Static UPS needs to be operated in an air-conditioned room, whereas DRUPS can be operated in a Mechanical Ventilation Room.

Cooling availability is increased because of continuous UPS power backup to Chiller System. DRUPS also decreases operational costs as flywheel kinetic energy storage requires a more simple preventative maintenance compared to the constant and scheduled monitoring required by static UPS. The flywheel bearing only requires replacement every 8 to 10 years, compared to every 4 to 5 years for the traditional static UPS.
